Our Story

Welcome to Handmade On Half Street!  Paul and I would like to thank you for stopping by.  We are the husband and wife team, behind the scenes, of our handmade business.

In 2013, I officially started my very first business, “Designs By Jolene”, which became a steady side-gig creating custom wedding invitations for family and friends.  The invitations expanded into stationery, birthday invitations and personalized gifts. In 2014, I opened my Etsy shop to sell many of these items.  While my primary focus was on papered-goods, we started sharing our home DIY projects and Paul’s woodworking on our blog.  Paul’s love for woodworking was reignited. More and more amazing pieces of furniture and home goods starting appearing all over our home.

Fast forward to the summer of 2016, when we decided to start a new journey, together. The spirit of Designs By Jolene was merged with Paul’s talent and sawdust magic to create our new endeavor, Handmade On Half Street.

We are commonly asked “ Half street? What is a half street?”  Well, let me tell you.  A half street is uncommon, but they defiantly exist. For example, you may spot a street sign with “18 1/2 Ave NE”.  Half streets are the real deal, people.  They may have been created as an after-thought, to create confusion among human kind, or poor planning.  But, we’re not judging.  Either way, they are just like a full street, but with a little more spunk.

In my experience, half streets are magical.  How do I know this?  I grew up on one. And, so did Paul.  In fact, we grew up across the street from each other.  Cue the “awwws”.   In a nutshell, we grew up as friends, started dating in college and married in 2009.

On said half street, we were blessed with an amazing neighborhood with several kids to grow-up with (hi friends!).  From bike rides, to street hockey, night games under the stars, sleepovers and camping adventures, we will never forget our magical half street.  The true inspiration for our business name.

Jolene Gallmeier

designer, maker, Paper guru & Cheese lover

I am the creative and crafty co-owner of Handmade On Half Street.  Amongst my closest friends and family I am happily known as the go-to-gal for creative design assistance from invitations, gift ideas, party planning, home projects, decorating and painting.  Call me crazy, but I LOVE to paint!

I have always loved arts and craft.  Art class was my favorite class as a kid. From coloring and drawing, to making handmade cards, sculpting tiny objects from modeling clay, mosaics, drawing floor plans to my dream house, painting my bedroom (every color under the sun) and rearranging the house, every week.  I was always busy being creative.

You will often find me in my studio, for endless hours, working on my latest project.  I am the happiest when I am in creative mode.  Equally tied for my happiest of times, is when I am spending quality time with my handy and hunky husband and our four-legged babies, Annie the Aussiedoodle and Hannah the Bengal kitty.

When I’m not immersed in a creative and chaotic mess in my studio, you’ll find me shooting a bazillion photos with my camera, planning a road trip adventure, picking on Paul, spending weekends at the cabin or walking Annie through our favorite park.

Paul Gallmeier

Craftsman, handyman & beer lover

Paul is the craftsman and co-owner of Handmade On Half Street. He is dedicated to everything he does, whether it be woodworking, hockey, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and home life with his three ladies (two of the three ladies are furry with four paws).

He learned woodworking skills while in college. His cousin worked at a cabinet shop and recruited Paul to work with him. They worked late into the evening, after everyone else left, to tackle projects such as: sanding, routing, shaping, assembly and installing hardware.

Paul enjoys the art of woodworking because it allows him to create something beautiful from a raw, natural piece of wood.  He can envision the completed project, before he even makes the first cut.  Paul believe’s the most rewarding part of working with your hands, is seeing the completed project at the end. The visual satisfaction is very rewarding.

When he’s not covered in sawdust, you’ll find Paul at the gym practicing his jiu-jitsu or dishing out assists as the local hockey rink.  Paul’s favorite treat after a hard skate is enjoying a cold brew-ski and pizza with his buddies.
